If you love the sound of the flute, and want to play it every day, you should play the flute. If some other instrument sounds better to you, play that one !
BAND is about brass and percussion. Woodwinds (flute, clarinet, bassoon and oboe) are the alternative sound.
Flutes usually play the melody and the highest notes. Advanced Band features flutes as birds, ocean waves, sparkles, accents and gorgeous solos. Band does teach how to play music together. Band doesn't teach very much about how to play your own instrument.
There is homework. You are expected to be able to play your part without mistakes. There are concerts at night. There may be marching and playing from memory in the spring. The conductor chooses the music, but asks your opinion. Everyone plays together, sometimes the same notes. You belong to a group of students who love playing music.
